How To Calculate Net Price Of College

How To Calculate Net Price Of College The government recently mandated that all colleges must include a net price calculator on their websites. However, many colleges easily found ways to hide theirs from students, according to an article in theUS News World Report. An accurate net price calculator is designed to give students and exact figure on what they will pay to attend (tuition plus room and board/additional fees subtracted by scholarships and financial aid). The government mandated these because many colleges were tricking prospective students into believing their schools were much more affordable than they actually were. Some colleges keep tuition low, but charge exorbitant amounts for room and board. Other schools publish high tuition fees but give nearly every student a scholarship, making students believe they are getting a better deal than they actually are. However, some colleges simply do not want students to know exactly what they will pay to attend. So, they hid their net price calculators or made them very difficult to find. Lynn OShaughnessy of the US News World Report picked six colleges randomly and searched their websites for their net price calculators. She picked three public colleges and three private institutions. She had a very difficult time finding them. OShaughnessy wrote that your chances of finding net price calculators are slim unless you are dogged about looking for them. Of the six schools OShaughnessy searched, only one, Auburn University, displayed its net price calculator where students could easily find it. Most of the other schools buried it on some random page, or hid it in blocks of text instead of displaying it as a link or on the admissions/financial aid pages. OShaughnessy had to use Google to find one schools net price calculator, which was hidden in a block of text on the scholarship page. At another school, she eventually found the calculator displayed as a small icon in the corner of a webpage. Many schools had cost of attending or similar pages; however, OShaughnessy rarely found the net price calculators there. Another school put its calculator at the bottom of a long page, making it very difficult to find. However, she was able to quickly find some schools by typing net price calculator into their search bars. The net price calculators are great tools for students and their parents. However, very few schools will actually publish their calculators in a logical place, and most schools will force students to dig around for them. But, every college must have one by law; so it is there and you will be able to find it eventually. First, you should try using the schools search box or doing a Google search. Also, by law colleges must make these accurate; however, it is still very difficult to create a completely accurate calculator because scholarships, financial aid and tuition figures are always changing. But, these can give you a good idea of how much you will pay for school.

Things to Know about AP® Exams

Things to Know about AP ® Exams Many high school students are probably aware of the terms Advanced Placement or AP, and of course, those taking AP classes understand that the courses offer a challenge for high-achieving students. But its worth reminding students important details about the AP exams and how performing well on these exams could benefit them. Here are five things to share: AP exams take place every May. Exams take place at high schools and exam centers only once a year. Students can get more details from the guidance counseling office. Students can take the exams more than once. If a student takes an exam and doesnt earn their desired score, they can retake it. The students score report will include scores for all AP exams taken unless the student requests that one be withheld. Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. The final score for each AP Exam offers a recommendation about how qualified students are to receive college credit and placement. Every college makes this decision differently. In 2018, the mean AP exam score was 2.89. Students can get college credit or placement for good AP scores. As mentioned, each college makes its own decisions about what scores receive credit or placement. Generally, students who earn a good score on an AP exam might be able to skip a course that a college requires for its general education requirements. AP scores shouldnt hurt a students chances for admission. Colleges consider a wide range of factors when admitting students, including the strength of their curriculum. So, while taking AP classes should bolster the application, a low AP exam score isnt likely to harm an applicants admission prospects. To learn more about AP scores and what they mean, students should meet with the guidance counselor at school and visit www.collegeboard.org.

5 Ways to Cope With A Finals Week Meltdown - TutorNerds

5 Ways to Cope With A Finals Week Meltdown - TutorNerds Finals week meltdown: 5 ways to cope Students are anxiously studying for final exams, and the reality has set in that theyre not as prepared as they thought they were. Teachers change assignments, students realize theyve lost notes from earlier in the term, and they dont have as much free time as they thought they would. This is when high school students tend to have a total meltdown and dont know how to cope with the amount of academic work that needs to get sorted through in the next week or so. Although students who are prepared tend to do better in general, there are some things every student can do to improve their chances of success. 1. Organize like crazy The very first thing students should do at this point is to get organized. When students sit down and jump into an hours-long study session without planning ahead, they tend to become overwhelmed and have to stop to figure things out. Its better to spend a few minutes planning what needs to get done on what day and at what time to prevent a lot of unnecessary stress. If math is due Tuesday and science is due Friday, by all means work on math first. If a student is great in English, but theyre, struggling in humanities, then they should spend more time on humanities. Organization is simple but incredibly useful when it comes to success during finals week. 2.   Get help from a study group and a tutor Many students are so stressed out that they just cant study alone anymore. They could have the content totally down but just cant quite get started. This is when its time to call a one-on-one tutor or arrange to meet with a study group. Tutors can help students organize and prioritize, and students in study groups help encourage each other to persevere and make studying a priority during this week. Students never have to study alone our private Orange County academic tutors are here to help you ace your finals. 3.   Prioritize Students also need to make some tough decisions when it comes to priorities. They should think about what they need to learn and what grades they need to get in each class. Theres a big difference between a final thats worth 25% and a final thats worth 10% of the final grade. Students might be hoping for a scholarship based on their overall GPA, or they might be planning to major in a particular subject when they start college. Priorities also include setting aside social activities during finals week and making academics the first thing they work on. 4. Be reasonable Students should also be reasonable with themselves and set goals they can reach. For instance, if theyve received a B- on every quiz and exam so far in a particular subject this year, thats probably a good goal for their final. Also, students should remember that they cannot get seven hours worth of study done in two. Planning ahead makes it easier to accomplish loftier goals and students should remember to be kind to themselves and know that their accomplishments have a lot of value (READ: College Finals: Tips from a Los Angeles College Tutor). 5. Use study aids High school students working on finals study should also utilize the many study aids available to them. They could use something as simple as a flash card program such as Quizlet. Or read CliffsNotes and SparkNotes online to review novels they read months ago. Students might also use a study app like Self Control, which helps them avoid social media distractions or they might use any number of useful personal organization apps to plan their schedule during the weeks coming up to the exams. https://quizlet.com/ https://www.cliffsnotes.com/ http://www.sparknotes.com/ https://selfcontrolapp.com/ All blog entries, with the exception of guest bloggers, are written by Tutor Nerds. But the summer is also a terrific opportunity to get ahead in your educational career. Sure, a kid needs a little time to relax. But it is a great idea to think about summer tutoring for your kid especially if you have noticed some of the following signs: 1. The grades of your kid were not so good as you was hoping to. She has noticed weaknesses in certain subjects and suggested tutoring sessions. 4. Your kid has a low self-esteem. Usually your kid just complains “I cannot do it” or “my teacher does not like me” 5. Your kid does not want to do his homework. The main excuse for not doing the home work is it’s too much homework. When you finally made your kid do some homework he has poor results.
